Art and the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc

For each Official Selection, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc commission an artist to customize their logo. This year, the Bordeaux-based artist Delphine Delas gave her interpretation of the Cru Bourgeois identity.

Delphine Delas has always been fascinated by the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, of the traveller on a journey, adopting a cross-disciplinary approach that draws on literature, history and the history of the art, with special affection for Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Hugo Pratt, Edmond Baudoin, Ella Maillart, Saint Exupéry, Blaise Cendrars, and Rimbaud.
Her creative style is also inspired by the mythological characters of ancient civilizations, pagan rituals and dream-like, poetic worlds in which nature rules and humans are a distant memory. She employs a wide range of techniques, producing murals, illustrations, installations, comic books, paintings, drawings, graffiti and street-art.
She explores all of these boundaries to create an art that is almost nomadic without limits or stylistic rules.

After a period travelling, she is currently working in Bordeaux. Having studied History of Art and Archaeology, she is currently pursuing a doctorate in arts at Bordeaux Montaigne University.

A few words from the artist :

"For me, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc represent excellence, elegance and the history of a region. The logo that I have created contains all these elements and is based on an old map of the Gironde that was produced for wine classification purposes. The map shows precisely the geographical area that contains all the properties that have traditionally borne the Cru Bourgeois designation.
The red background recalls wine : a strong, warm colour symbolizing quality and the visceral commitment of the properties to their wines.

The logo’s interior is completely filled with shapes that suggest more organic elements such as the vines’ roots and leaves. The logo combines the historical aspect of a region deeply rooted in the product of its terroir with a powerful link with nature, so vital to wine production.
So visually, we move from an historical representation to more natural, organic style, while at the same time giving elegance to the logo with the simple, clean lines immediately recalling the Crus Bourgeois tradition.

Finally the white lines radiating from the composition reflect the Crus Bourgeois’ national and international reputation, and their export all over the world. These rays give the impression of solar energy, drawing the eye to the centre."
